CHICAGO, Ill. (WBAP/KLIF News) – A judge in Illinois will hear testimony in a lawsuit to determine whether Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz is eligible for the party’s nomination.
Lawrence Joyce, a Chicago-area man who has objected to the former Texas Solicitor General’s name being placed on the Illinois primary ballot next month, will have his case heard on Friday. His previous objection was dismissed on Feb. 1. It was made to the state’s Board of Elections. Joyce appealed the decision.
Joyce questions if Cruz is a “true American citizen” because he was born in Canada. Cruz maintains he is a natural-born citizen because his mother was born in America.
“What I fear is that Ted Cruz becomes the nominee, come September, Congressman Alan Grayson of Florida will go forward with his threats and probably several other Democrats will file suit to prevent Ted Cruz from being on the ballot,” Joyce told USA TODAY. “What Democrats will do at that point is cherry pick which county courthouse they are going to show up in order to file these petitions,” Joyce said.
