DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The ACLU of Texas is warning Dallas police not to violate the civil rights of the homeless as Tent City is shut down.
Trisha Trigilio says they want police to treat the occupants with respect.
“Make sure that at the command level in the police department they are actually preparing officers and giving officers the tools they need for an interaction that is going to be probably very difficult,” Trigilio said.
The ACLU of Texas says in a letter to Dallas Police Chief David Brown that ordinances against sleeping in public and asking for food criminalizes poverty.
Tent City, under Interstate 45 near Downtown Dallas, is to be closed in sections by May 4th.
