WASHINGTON (WBAP/KLIF) – The U.S. Senate has approved a $1.1-billion proposal to combat the threat of the Zika virus.
Senator John Cornyn says the money is for both prevention and research.
“Some of it is basic research in order to develop a vaccine which is really the goal,” said Senator Cornyn.
Cornyn had offered a similar proposal with the same dollar amount except it would be taken from funds within the Affordable Care Act’s Prevention and Public Health Fund. He says he will still support the plan that was approved.
The Senate plan is closer to the $1.9-billion request from the White House. The House has a proposal for just over $600-million.
The Senate plan now moves to conference with the House.
