Execution Stayed for Texas Death Row Inmate

WEST LIVINGSTON (WBAP/KLIF News)  The execution of a Texas man has been stayed. Jeffery Wood, from Kerrville, near Austin, was scheduled to die tomorrow by lethal injection. Wood was sentenced in 1996 in the shooting death of a gas station attendant during a robbery, but another man was convicted of the killing and has already been executed. This means Wood is on death row for crimes that don’t include a murder conviction. Testimony shows he was sitting outside the station when the murder happened, but Texas has a law that allows death penalty convictions for convicts who are party to a murder. There are currently 5 executions scheduled in Texas for this year. The state is responsible for nearly half of executions nationwide.
