AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) — Despite objections from abortion rights advocates Texas will require the cremation or burial of fetal remains as of Dec. 19th.
Changes to rules for the disposal of aborted fetuses have been in the works since July. The initial proposal has remained basically intact despite months of hearings and thousands of public comments submitted to the Health and Human Services Commission.
The Texas Tribune reports that the rules will not apply to miscarriages or abortions that occur in a woman’s home.
The new rules were strongly endorsed by Governor Greg Abbott, who wrote in an email to prospective donors he doesn’t believe fetal remains should be “treated like medical waste and disposed of in landfills.”
