Keller (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Keller Police Department is one of the first in the nation to adopt a GPS system for dispatching 911 calls. Communications Director Warren Dudley says the Siren GPS system, which is nicknamed “Uber for 911”, is a lot more accurate than the traditional cellphone call through a tower.
“When somebody uses the app to dial 911, it calls the traditional 911, but it puts a GPS location map on a side screen,” said Dudley.
He says that’s better than using a cell tower to find a location, because that tower could be miles away from where the caller is.
The app doesn’t even require the caller to talk to dispatch, he said. In cases of abduction, domestic abuse, or in any cases in which the caller can’t speak, communication can be done through text messaging.
The Keller PD is the first department in Texas to adopt the Siren GPS system, and one of the first in the nation.
