COCKRELL HILL (WBAP/KLIF News) – Video evidence and some legal documents were lost when a computer virus got into the Cockrell Hill Police Department computer system.
Chief Stephen Barlag said it was not a hack, but it happened when someone clicked on an email designed to look like it came from a department address.
The “ransomware” virus demanded $4,000 worth of internet currency called Bitcoin for the return of the files.
The servers were wiped clean rather than paying the ransom, because the FBI told the department they might not get the files back.
Barlag said none of the files lost were critical.
