ARLINGTON, TX (WBAP/KLIF News) — The Texas Department of Public Safety is protecting state Rep. Tony Tinderholt, R-Arlington, and his family after the lawmaker received death threats for authoring a bill to criminalize all abortions.
In a statement issued Monday Tinderholt’s chief of staff, Micah Cavanaugh said, “Representative Tinderholt and his family have received multiple death threats leading to his family being placed under DPS protection on multiple occasions. Specifics to the threats cannot be discussed due to an ongoing investigation, and we do not intend to speak on behalf of law enforcement.”
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports Cavanaugh also credits the Arlington Police Department and Tarrant County sheriff’s office for assisting in the lawmaker’s protection and with threat investigations.
The threats began when Tinderholt’s Abolition of Abortion in Texas Act, HB 948, was filed January 11. If enacted the bill would allow abortion providers and women who receive abortions to be charged with murder. There would be no exceptions.
