HOUSTON (WBAP/KLIF News) — Concerned about what he sees as a steady erosion of free speech, Woodville, Texas, state Rep. James White has introduced a bill that would prevent employers from firing employees who express their political views.
“I see this as an extension of the protection class for religion, the protection class for creed, the protection class for race,” White said in announcing HB 2787.
KHOU reports several employers approached White for help after they were pressured to fire employees for expressing their opinions on their own free time, away from the office.
“We need to get back to a point where we can disagree with anyone’s position, but we can value everyone’s First Amendment rights,” White said.
He is hoping for a hearing on the bill but admits that the Legislature is focused on other issues.
