AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – In pushing a replacement for the Affordable Care Act that cuts off funds for Planned Parenthood, Republicans are reassuring women that other clinics will step up to provide low-cost breast exams, birth control and cancer screenings.
However, one effort in Texas to prove Planned Parenthood isn’t needed is quietly sputtering. The state gave an anti-abortion organization called the Heidi Group $1.6 million to help strengthen small clinics specializing in women’s health.
But an Associated Press review finds little to show for the nonprofit’s work, raising questions about whether the clinics will meet an ambitious goal of serving 50,000 women.
The organization is led by Carol Everett, a prominent anti-abortion activist. She says some of her community clinics won’t cooperate despite her best efforts.
