DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – On Friday night around 11:42p.m., all 156 emergency sirens in the city of Dallas were activated. These are the sirens that are normally used to warn of approaching tornadoes and severe weather.
The Office of Energency Management (OEM) said Friday night’s siren malfunction was the result of a security hack, which the city believes was originated from the Dallas area. The FCC has been notified and the city is taking steps to make sure this type of hack does not happen again.
Many Dallas residents were disturbed by the sound of the sirens repeatedly going off for roughly 30 minutes. The sirens were deactivated around 1:17a.m. The system is reportedly offline and the city is working to reactivate it. The city is asking residents to be patient if the sirens should sound off again during reactivation and please do not call 911 or 311 for concerns about sirens.
