GREENVILLE (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Hunt County Sheriff’s Department is inviting North Texans to attend it’s active shooter seminar in Greenville this weekend.
The “A Public Shooter in the Making: Mindset of an Active Shooter” course will teach citizens how to spot a shooter before a tragedy occurs.
The department’s Sergeant Jeff Haines cites the outcome of the shooting at West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement last December, when two people were fatally shot before the gunman was killed by armed security.
He said the man’s behavior raised a red flag.
“It drew the attention of the security team at the church that was monitoring his behavior. That was a highly-trained team. It was sad for the loss of life that happened in that church that day but it could have been so much worse,” said Sgt. Haines.
The four-and-a-half-hour course will teach participants what to look for.
“We’re going to teach our public how to identify things that don’t look right and report those things. In law enforcement we have a saying “if you see something say something”…well, if you don’t know what you’re seeing how are you going to tell us,” said Sgt. Gaines.
The instructor will break down the various details that can help stop a shooting like behavioral characteristics of offenders, how to identify a red flag, how to identify potential threats to churches, schools and businesses as well as ways to spot external threats from potential suspects.
The department and partnering organizations tout the program as being beneficial for any church that wants to put a security team in place or for businesses that want to train their employees to help avoid a potentially dangerous situation.
The free seminar is at The Church at River Oaks at 5903 Joe Ramsey Blvd. in Greenville this Saturday from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
