MCKINNEY (WBAP/KLIF) – The calls for justice in the death of Marvin Scott III inside the Collin County jail are growing louder following the medical examiner’s ruling that Scott’s manner of death was “homicide.”

Collin County Medical Examiner, Dr. William Rohr, released his findings on Wednesday that show Scott’s cause of death was “fatal acute stress response in an individual with previously diagnosed schizophrenia during restraint struggle with law enforcement.” The manner of death is listed as homicide.
The ME’s office is still awaiting laboratory results before completing Scott’s final autopsy report.
According to the Collin County Sheriff’s Office, Scott died last month after being restrained inside the Collin County jail. He had been arrested in an Allen parking lot on a marijuana charge. Sheriff Jim Skinner said Scott was restrained and detention Officers placed a spit hood on him after he began to act strange during the booking process. Seven detention Officers were later fired and one Officer resigned. An appeal has since allowed one of the Officers to have their job restored.
The announcement of Scott’s manner of death came on the same day Scott’s family viewed surveillance video of the incident with the Sheriff’s department. The video has not been handed over to the family, nor publicly released. Scott’s mother called the video “inhumane” and “horrific.”
“The video shows Marvin expressing that he was in distress,” said Scott family attorney Lee Merritt. “The video shows signs that any neutral observer could see that this person was rapidly deteriorating and needed help. Instead of help Marvin to a facility that could treat him, he was brutalized. He was maced. Several Officers kneeled on top of him.”
Scott’s family is calling for the immediate arrest of all Officers involved. They are also demanding the public release of the video.
