DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Dallas County has sworn in a district attorney to fill out the rest of Susan Hawk’s term. Hawk was elected in 2014 but resigned last year to focus on mental health.

Former prosecutor and judge Faith Johnson will serve through 2018.

“I am a woman of integrity and I want to maintain that integrity,” Johnson says.

Johnson is the first African American woman to serve as district attorney in Dallas County. Governor Greg Abbott appointed her to serve the rest of Hawk’s term last month.

Johnson says she will work with police to establish better relationships in different neighborhoods and secure more convictions.

“I deeply realize how difficult and dangerous it is for law enforcement to keep our community safe,” Johnson says.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s office has about 350 prosecutors and investigators. Assistant District Attorney Messina Madison’s last day was Friday, December 30th.
