Four people, including a Dallas firefighter, were injured a fire a Northeast Dallas apartment complex on Tuesday morning.
According to Dallas Fire-Rescue, units were assigned to a 911 call for a structure fire at the Legends of Lake Highlands Apartments just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday. When firefighters arrived at the apartment complex, they observed lots of smoke coming from a two-story apartment building.
“Having received reports of residents still inside the building, first arriving units mounted up, with hand lines deployed, to simultaneously conduct rescue and suppression operations,” DFR said in a statement. “Firefighters were able to access the fire, which had spread to the upper floor, and bring it under control within the hour, limiting the fire damage to four units.”
Five rescue units were dispatched to the scene to help mitigate the situation and treat any possible injuries.
According to DFR, there were two residents who were taken to a local hospital with undisclosed burn injuries, while a third resident was treated at the scene but chose not to be transported. A a firefighter suffered a lower body injury after falling from a ladder while rescuing a female resident. The firefighter was also taken to a local hospital but is expected to be okay.
DFR said there were 16 total units in the building of origin, but apartment management stated that they had apartments available to accommodate all the displaced residents. Investigators were able to determine that the fire began in the kitchen area of a first-floor apartment, but exactly how is unknown. The cause is currently listed as undetermined.
