WASHINGTON D.C. (WBAP/KLIF News) – The founder of the far-right Oath Keepers militia group, whose currently jailed, will be transferred to Washington D.C. to await trial on seditious conspiracy charges connected to the deadly January 6 Capitol riot in 2021.
Stewart Rhodes of Granbury has been jailed since his January 13th arrest on charges that he plotted with 10 others to attack the U.S. Capitol to stop Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.
The court order for Rhodes’ transfer was signed on January 31,2022 by U.S. Magistrate Judge Kimberly C. Priest Johnson.
Last week, Judge Johnson had denied Rhodes’ request to be let out on bail. She concluded that Rhodes posed a safety and flight risk if released.
Rhodes’ attorneys have filed a motion to block the transfer.
The North Texas native has pleaded not guilty on the charges. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
The Department of Justice said more than 725 arrests in connection with the January 6 attack. Dozens of the accused are from North Texas.
