FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF) – Testimony began Monday in the murder trial for former Fort Worth Police Officer Aaron Dean.
Dean is accused of shooting Atatiana Jefferson to death in her family’s Fort Worth home in 2019. He was responding to an open door call.
During opening arguments, prosecutors said Dean had no business firing his gun through a bedroom window. The defense claims Dean feared for his life when he saw a silhouette with a gun in the window.
Jefferson’s nephew, 6th grader Zion Carr, witnessed the killing. He was the first witness called to testified, and said that the door of the home was open because he and his “Aunt Tay” burned hamburgers while cooking earlier in the evening.
“We heard the alarm, and then just like a lot of smoke came in,” said Carr who described playing video games with his aunt before she heard a noise and grabbed a gun from her purse.
Testimony ended before noon on Monday to allow lawyers to attend a funeral service for former defense attorney in the case, Jim Lane. Testimony resumes Tuesday at 9 a.m.
