Fort Worth (WBAP/KLIF) – A motion for a new trial was filed this week for Aaron Dean, the former Fort Worth police officer convicted last month in the shooting death of Atatiana Jfferson over three years ago,.
The motion does not provide details on grounds for a new trial. it simply state, “The defendant in this case should be granted a new trial because the verdict is contrary to the law and the evidence.”
Earlier this month, Dean’s lawyers were granted a motion to investigate a jury member from the original trial who is alleged to have sought opinions on line during the sentencing phase of the trial. The issue was reportedly handled by the trial judge.
Dean’s lawyers could argue that the alleged action may have swayed the outcome of the trial.
Dean was sentenced to 11 years, 10 months and 12 days in prison after being convicted of manslaughter for shooting Jefferson in her home during an unannounced police welfare check on October 12, 2019.
One of Jefferson’s neighbors had call the Fort Worth Police Department’s non-emergency line in the overnight hours to report that the front door of her home was open. Jefferson was inside the home with her nephew and had armed herself with her registered gun after hearing a noise outside.
