LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The number of states imposing sales taxes on groceries is likely to shrink as lawmakers hear complaints about high prices for eggs and other household staples. Arkansas’ governor on Tuesday unveiled details of a plan to eradicate the remaining 1/8th of a cent sales tax on groceries. It joins proposals in several other states including Mississippi and Tennessee to cut or outright repeal grocery taxes. Only nine states tax groceries. The push for more reductions comes as states face budget uncertainty because of cuts being considered in Medicaid and other federal programs.
