DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A North Texas anesthesiologist accused of tampering with several IV bags at a Dallas surgical center has been indicted on ten counts.
Prosecutors said 59-year-old Doctor Ranyaldo Ortiz allegedly injected nerve-blocking agents into the bags at Baylor Scott and White Surgicare North Dallas at 12230 Coit Road back in August and caused the death of 55-year-old Doctor Melanie Kaspar and at least 11 other cardiac emergencies.
He was indicted on four counts of tampering with consumer products resulting in serious bodily injury, one count of tampering with consumer products and and five counts of adulteration of a drug.
According to the complaint, Ortiz, who had a history of disciplinary actions against him at the facility, expressed concern to other physicians about the actions and said the center was trying to “crucify” him.
His next court hearing is on Friday, October 14.
If convicted, Ortiz faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
