TARRANT COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Tarrant County judicial candidate has withdrawn his bid for re-election following allegations of electoral fraud.
The move comes days after opponents of Justice of the Peace Russ Casey said his candidate petition has forged signatures.
Aaron Harris with Direct Action Texas spoke out earlier this week.
“Here’s a guy who is an incumbent judge who makes decisions that affect people’s lives on a day to day basis. He determines people’s destinies and yet he has shown that his character is such that he’s willing to lie just to get on the ballot,” he said.
Casey said Wednesday he’s withdrawing because he believes the county’s Republican Party chairman is against his re-election and the election wouldn’t be conducted fairly.
The scandal has struck a chord with the public. John Flemming lives in Tarrant County and said the allegations are disturbing, especially when they’re against a judge.
“It is a big deal. I mean, they should be held accountable. Everybody else is. You would go to jail if you commit a crime so he should too,” he said.
Casey is no stranger to controversy, he recently settled a 2015 sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a former law clerk.
He was reprimanded by the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct.
