SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A record-setting amount of rain has fallen in parts of Texas, knocking out power to thousands, flooding streets and forcing high-water rescues.
Officials in Houston urged motorists to stay home today until the water recedes after six inches of rain fell across much of Harris County.
Authorities are warning motorists of more than a dozen areas of high water along highways. Fire officials say they’ve conducted about two-dozen water rescues Tuesday, mostly pulling drivers from their stranded cars.
National Weather Service meteorologist Aaron Treadway said Monday the storm system began forming in West Texas over the weekend and over the course of 24 hours brought up to 7 inches of rain to parts of the Hill Country.
He says up to 3 inches has fallen Monday along a broad stretch of the state that includes San Antonio and Austin. Part of San Antonio set a single-day record for Aug. 7 with nearly 4 inches.
San Antonio firefighters were called to assist motorists stranded by high water. At least one neighborhood was evacuated.
