AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) — Gov. Greg Abbott is leaving no doubt that the buck stops at his desk.
In a Memorial Day news conference Abbott said he will announce later this week whether or not to call state lawmakers back to work and he made it clear that he won’t do so because of political pressure.
“I can tell you this, and that is when it gets to a special session, the time and the topics are solely up to the governor of the state of Texas, and we will be, if we have a special session, convening only on the topics that I choose at the time of my choosing,” Abbott said.
Among those asking for a special session, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick wants to finish the creation of a “bathroom bill” to require people to use public restrooms designate for their physical gender at birth. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports when Abbott was asked if he was feeling pressure from the Lt. Gov. he said, “None”.
Special sessions of the legislature can last up to 30 days at a cost of roughly $800,000.
Abbott’s comments came after a bill signing at the state Department of Transportation’s Riverside Campus.
