HURST (WBAP/KLIF News) — An eight-year-old in Hurst held a birthday party over the holiday weekend that none of his friends showed up to.
That is, until the Hurst Police and Fire Departments caught wind of it.
Jennifer Day went to the police department after son Graham was devastated that his friend’s skipped out on his celebration. She asked if one officer could come visit him at the party because Graham had said before he wanted to become a police officer some day.
Instead, the departments sent nearly a dozen officers and firefighters.
“We just want to be part of the community and be able to go celebrate with him and everyone else to see that happen,” said assistant police chief Steve Niekamp. “That makes us feel good.”
Niekamp said he hopes the gesture left Graham with a memory he’ll never forget, and that the community realizes officers do more than just write tickets and put people in handcuffs.
“We can do stuff that shows we are part of the community and have those good bonds — especially starting with an eight-year-old who will hopefully remember this for the rest of his life,” Niekamp said. “We really look forward to getting the opportunity to do stuff like that.”
