DART Hopes to Submit Subway Plans to Federal Government Later This Year

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Dallas Area Rapid Transit gave an overview of its plans for a subway to the Dallas City Council’s Transportation Committee Monday afternoon.

DART chief executive Gary Thomas laid out three potential routes.

He said public meetings are planned for next month and they’re hoping to submit a plan for funding to the federal government in September.

“There is a lot of design criteria…a lot of parts and pieces that have to follow this to really develop the project and make it work like we all want it to,” he said.

Thomas told the committee that they would work around plans to rebuild the highway separating downtown and Deep Ellum.

“Where does that go? Does it go below ground or does it stay up in the air? Those are things that the city and TXDOT will have to work out over a period of time,” he said.

Plans could include another stop near Baylor Hospital or in Deep Ellum.

Thomas said he hopes to launch a subway line through downtown by 2024.
