Dallas County Community College District Approves Concealed Carry Policy

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Dallas County Community College District has approved its concealed carry policy in anticipation of a new law that takes effect in in a few months.

Senate Bill 11 allows concealed handguns on campus August 1st.

Last month, a student was shot and killed at North Lake College in Irving.

Since then, many college students have expressed concern about the potential for campus violence.

DCCCD Security Commissioner Lauretta Hill said there was concern before and after that shooting about guns on campus.

“Overwhelmingly, people that we talked to, and that didn’t change after the incident at North Lake, have anxiety and they’re uncomfortable with the fact that people are going to be allowed to carry on college campuses,” she said.

Hill said the district’s policy won’t allow guns in certain places.

“The healthcare facilities, child care facilities, any of our labs that contain combustible equipment and other specific events,” she said.

Despite the possibility of a rise in anxiety among students and staff, Hill said the district will do everything it can to keep things stable.

“What we will do and continue to do is to provide a safe and secure environment by having a presence on our campuses. Letting people know what the policy is and what the rules are so they will no what to expect when August 1st gets here,” he said.

Hill said violators of campus policies could face misdemeanor charges.
