Texas Parks and Wildlife Department announced that the new Backcountry Area at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area will open for self-guided day use starting July 7, giving hikers and outdoor enthusiasts expanded access to more than 3,000 additional acres of the popular Hill Country destination.
The opening marks the first phase of public access to the park’s recent expansion.
Visitors will reach the Backcountry Area by hiking approximately 2 miles from the main park headquarters along existing trails before entering through a pedestrian gate. No vehicle parking is available in the new section.
“This first wave of development will be a good fit for true adventurers who want a more rugged experience than what they’ve been currently experiencing at Enchanted Rock,” said Superintendent Doug Cochran. “Future phases will see closer parking so people of other experience levels can enjoy the beauty of the Backcountry.”
The Backcountry Area is part of Enchanted Rock’s growth under the state’s Centennial Parks initiative. The expansion added roughly 3,072 acres to the original 1,685-acre park through land acquisitions finalized earlier in 2026. This is the first self-guided day-use opening for the new property.
Park officials emphasize the rugged nature of the new area. Trails are described as challenging with limited shade. Visitors are advised to bring plenty of water, salty snacks, sunscreen, and appropriate sun protection. Hiking with a buddy, sharing a plan with someone, and carrying a cellphone are strongly recommended.
Backcountry hours run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., differing from the main park’s schedule. Two water refill stations are available — one at the entrance and another at the central trail intersection of Ringtail Loop and Songbird Trail, per the press release. A portable restroom is located at the central water station. New trail maps are available at park headquarters and online.
The development follows the standard timeline for Centennial Parks projects, which calls for facilitated public day use (such as guided hikes) at the 12-month mark and expanded self-guided access at 18 months. Enchanted Rock is accelerating portions of this timeline for the new acreage.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, located near Fredericksburg, is known for its massive pink granite dome that rises 325 feet above the surrounding landscape. The park draws tens of thousands of visitors annually for hiking, rock climbing, and stargazing. The expansion is expected to relieve some pressure on the main summit trail while offering more solitude and primitive experiences.
Standard day-use entrance fees of $8 per adult apply. Children 12 and under enter free. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak seasons, as the park often reaches capacity.
