(WBAP/KLIF) — Lawyers for convicted murderer Karmelo Anthony are arguing that his murder trial violated his constitutional rights and are seeking a new trial.
Court hearings regarding the potential new trial and the removal of the judge will be open to observers but not live-streamed. Anthony’s legal team claims the trial was effectively closed to the public, prosecutors did not honor an evidentiary agreement, and jury instructions made it difficult to consider self-defense.
The defense also requested the removal of Judge John Roach from post-trial hearings due to alleged bias. Anthony was found guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a 2025 track meet and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
