O.D. Wyatt High School in Fort Worth was placed on lockdown Monday after a student was reported to have taken a photograph of himself with a firearm on campus, according to Fort Worth ISD.
Five students have been detained as part of the investigation, including the student who allegedly took the photograph, school district officials said.
The lockdown was initiated as a precaution while Fort Worth police and school officials investigate the situation. Fort Worth ISD said students and staff are safe.
“Parents and families are asked not to come to campus at this time and to allow law enforcement and school personnel to complete their work,” the district said in a statement, per WFAA.
Families were urged to rely on official communications from Fort Worth ISD and law enforcement for updates.
Police Investigate Firearm Report
The Fort Worth Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the photograph and whether a firearm was present on campus.
Law enforcement officers were seen searching multiple vehicles in a parking area near the school as part of the investigation. Officials have not disclosed how any of the vehicles may be connected to the case.
The names and ages of the detained students have not been released.
Fort Worth ISD said it is working with police and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
Students Remain Safe
The district said the lockdown was ordered to allow authorities to assess the situation and ensure the safety of everyone on campus.
Officials said there was no current threat to students or staff, but the campus at 2400 East Seminary Drive remained under lockdown while the investigation continued.
Parents and families were asked to stay away from O.D. Wyatt High School during the response.
Monday was the first day of the new school year for O.D. Wyatt and other Fort Worth ISD campuses. It was also the district’s first day of school following the state’s takeover of Fort Worth ISD.
Authorities have not announced whether the investigation will result in criminal charges. Further details are expected as police continue investigating.
