Bondi Directs DOJ to Prosecute Suspect in N.C. Stabbing Death

Attorney General Pam Bondi has directed the Department of Justice to federally prosecute the man accused of killing a Ukrainian immigrant last month on a North Carolina light rail train.

“Iryna Zarutska was a young woman living the American dream — her horrific murder is a direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies that put criminals before innocent people,” Bondi posted on X Tuesday.

On Aug. 22 on Charlotte, North Carolina’s South End, the 23-year-old Zarutska was fatally stabbed shortly after boarding a light rail train. Police identified the suspect as Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, who has since been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Brown had been released before the slaying by Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes.
