Rep. Mace Seeks to Rename DC Site Honoring Charlie Kirk

A Republican push to rename a prominent block near the White House intensified Wednesday as Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced legislation to replace Black Lives Matter Plaza with a designation honoring slain conservative leader Charlie Kirk, reopening a political fight over how the capital frames recent history and free speech.

Rep. Mace unveiled a bill that would rename the stretch once known as Black Lives Matter Plaza as the Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza.

The proposal marks the most direct congressional effort yet to reshape the site, which became a focal point for racial justice demonstrations in 2020 and remains an ongoing flashpoint over the District of Columbia’s political identity.
