Republicans Sue to Block New Calif. House Maps

In a swift legal move, California Republicans filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday seeking to block the state’s newly approved congressional maps, which were adopted by voters hours earlier under Proposition 50, The New York Times reported.

The suit was brought in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. According to the complaint, the maps are unconstitutional because they improperly rely on race to draw districts and ask the court to prevent them from taking effect in upcoming elections, the report said.

The legal action follows the passage of Proposition 50, a measure backed by Gov. Gavin Newsom that dilutes the role of the independent redistricting commission and empowers the Democrat-controlled Legislature to redraw congressional districts.
