DALLAS – A chaotic scene unfolded Saturday at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center during the NCA All-Star National Championship, leaving 10 people injured and raising concerns about event security.
According to Dallas police, a fight inside the venue led to multiple poles being knocked over, triggering a loud noise and widespread panic. Misinformation quickly spread, with some attendees fearing an active shooter situation. As a result, people rushed to evacuate, causing injuries ranging from minor bruises to broken bones. Authorities confirmed that no gunfire occurred.
Despite the turmoil, the competition resumed on Sunday with increased security presence outside the convention center, serving as a stark reminder of the previous day’s events.
Competition Resumes Amid Heightened Security
Organizers assured attendees that all performances canceled on Saturday were rescheduled for Sunday. However, some teams chose not to compete due to lingering fears.
Danielle Garvin, whose daughter’s team traveled from Ohio, recalled the moment panic spread through the building. “We were in our team room when we heard reports of gunshots. It was terrifying,” she said. Despite initial hesitation, her team ultimately decided to return on Sunday.
Other parents expressed concerns over the security measures at large-scale cheer competitions. Candice, a cheer mom from St. Louis, emphasized the need for improved safety protocols. “This isn’t just a Dallas issue—many large convention centers lack security screenings and bag checks. Unfortunately, this may serve as a wake-up call for event organizers.”
Community Resilience and Moving Forward
Tiana Cody, who sheltered in place with her daughter until they were evacuated, praised the support within the cheerleading community. “I left it up to my daughter to decide if she wanted to perform on Sunday. She didn’t feel pressured, and neither did I,” Cody said. “Cheer is more than bows and glitter—it’s a culture of resilience.”
Following the incident, all injured individuals were transported to local hospitals, though none sustained life-threatening injuries. Dallas police continue to investigate the altercation that led to the initial panic.
As the competition concluded, many attendees left with a renewed appreciation for their community—but also with a call for improved safety measures at future events.
