15 Austin Police Officers Placed On Restricted Duty

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – As the city of Austin prepares for its SXSW, 15 Police Officers have been placed on restricted duty.  The action appears to be related to two officer involved shootings within the last month.  Both shootings were fatal and both are under investigation.

On February 19th, police shot and killed a man after he reportedly hijacked a car, then led police on a high speed chase and ultimately waved a gun. In a second incident, police shot and killed a man last Wednesday, after reports that the man had killed two others. Later, police found a suicide note, but no other victims.

The Austin American Statesman says 15 is an unprecedented number.  The Austin Police Department employs roughly 1,800 police officers.
