Amber Guyger released after being granted parole in shooting death of Botham Jean
WFAA News 8:
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles said the decision was made after “a thorough review and consideration of a plethora of information.”
DALLAS — Just over seven years after Amber Guyger was convicted of murder in the shooting of Botham Jean, she was released, WFAA has confirmed.
Guyger was released on Friday morning from a prison in Gatesville. A Dallas police officer at the time of the shooting, Guyger was found guilty of murdering Jean in 2018. She said she mistook Jean’s apartment for her own, assumed he was an intruder and shot him. DPD fired Guyger days after the shooting on Sept. 24, 2018.
Guyger was sentenced to 10 years in prison during her 2019 trial. In 2021 and early 2022, Guyger appealed multiple times to have her conviction overturned but was denied by the courts.
The news of Guyger’s granted parole came days after what would have been Jean’s 35th birthday. It also happened just shy of three years before she was set to be released: Sept. 29, 2029, which would have been his 38th birthday.
According to the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole, the reasons for approval were:
- The record does not include a documented pattern of violent or assaultive arrests/convictions.
- The record indicates that the offender has maintained a satisfactory institutional adjustment.
- The record indicates participation in and completion of programs and activities in the individual treatment plan that should enhance chances to obtain and maintain full-time stable employment.
