MREIJEH, Lebanon (AP) — Israel has struck Beirut’s southern suburbs without warning, defying a U.S. request not to attack Lebanon’s capital. The strikes come days after a ceasefire agreement in Washington. Iran had warned that an attack on Beirut would renew full-scale war across the Mideast. Two people are reported killed and others hurt. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office says the strikes were in retaliation for the Iranian-backed Hezbollah firing at northern Israel. Hezbollah did not immediately claim responsibility for that. The White House hasn’t commented. The fighting in Lebanon threatens efforts to end the Iran war.
