Elon Musk pledged Monday to give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in America in 2027, following Anthropic’s announcement of a public benefit fund.
The pledge followed a back-and-forth on X after Anthropic announced the fund October 18.
“I recommend giving the shares directly to the public,” Musk wrote in response to the company’s announcement.
In a follow-up post, he added: “This is what I will be doing.”
By early Monday, Musk had identified the shares and the recipients: “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” he wrote. “This will be the first of many.”
Details still to come
Musk did not explain in his post how he would distribute the shares, determine eligibility or handle accounts for minors.
The Treasury Department’s separate Trump Accounts program provides children’s investment accounts, as The Dallas Express previously reported. Musk did not mention that program in his post.
How Anthropic’s fund would work
Anthropic said it would commit 5% of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval.
Its board could add another 2% of company shares for each 50% increase in the company’s value above a set baseline. Those additions would remain discretionary.
The company did not disclose the baseline and said it would release more information about governance and valuation milestones in the coming months.
Anthropic plans to operate the fund as a wholly owned limited liability company. Potential uses include donations to nonprofits and direct payments to selected populations.
The company identified AI’s potential disruption of the labor market as one possible focus. Anthropic said it had already committed $200 million to studying and addressing that issue.
The fund would not use its Anthropic shares for lobbying or political contributions in the United States or abroad, the company said.
Together with earlier co-founder pledges and employee donation matching, the new commitment would dedicate roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares to public benefit, the company said.
